UAE Flag Day (United Arab Emirates)

UAE Flag Day, on November 3, is a national celebration of the flag of the United Arab Emirates. It commemorates the flag first adopted on December 2, 1971 – the day the Emirates federated – and was first marked as a day in its own right in 2013. On the day itself, the flag is raised simultaneously across the country at a set time, from government buildings and schools to private homes, in a nationwide show of unity.

The flag’s four colours – red, green, white and black – are the pan-Arab colours, and each carries a meaning: red stands for courage and sacrifice, green for hope and growth, white for peace and honesty, and black for strength of mind. The design was created by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, and it has flown over the Emirates since the federation was founded.

The story behind UAE Flag Day

November 3 was chosen because it marks the anniversary of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan becoming President of the UAE in 2004. The day was proclaimed to give the country’s relatively young federation – and its people, including the large expatriate population – an annual moment to reflect on what the flag represents: the coming together of seven Emirates into one state in 1971, and the shared identity built since.

On UAE Flag Day, the emphasis is on collective participation. The synchronized flag-raising at a fixed hour is the centrepiece, turning a simple act – hoisting a flag – into a moment the whole country shares. Schools often build lessons around it, teaching children the meaning of the colours and the story of the 1971 federation. For a country in which a large share of residents come from abroad, the day is deliberately inclusive: everyone who lives and works in the Emirates is invited to raise the flag and share the moment.

How to mark UAE Flag Day

The day is marked wherever Emiratis and UAE residents find themselves. Here are a few ideas:

  • Raise the flag. Hoist the UAE flag at home, at work or at school – and join the simultaneous raising at the set time if you are in the country.
  • Learn the colours. Memorise what each colour means: red for courage and sacrifice, green for hope and growth, white for peace and honesty, black for strength of mind.
  • Learn the seven Emirates. Read about the seven Emirates and how they came together in the 1971 federation.
  • Visit a cultural event. Look out for UAE National Day exhibitions or cultural events in the run-up to December 2, which Flag Day’s spirit naturally leads into.

Why UAE Flag Day matters

UAE Flag Day matters because flags are where national stories become visible. For a young country built from seven separate Emirates in 1971, the annual synchronized raising of one flag is a powerful, simple statement of what the federation means – and a chance for every resident, whatever their background, to take part in it.
