World Cities Day is an annual United Nations observance held on 31 October.
History: It was established on 27 December 2013 by the United Nations General Assembly in resolution A/RES/68/239, and first held in 2014. It is organised by UN-Habitat in coordination with each year’s host city, and is a legacy of Expo 2010 Shanghai. Its purpose is to promote international interest in global urbanisation, push forward cooperation among countries in meeting the opportunities and addressing the challenges of urbanisation, and contribute to sustainable urban development around the world. It ties in with Sustainable Development Goal 11, to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. The general theme is Better City, Better Life, while each year a different sub-theme and host city are selected. For 2026, the Global Observance takes place in Fuzhou, China, under the theme Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All, focusing on urban regeneration as a way to achieve adequate housing for all and create more inclusive, climate-resilient neighbourhoods.
How to mark it: learn about your own city’s housing, transport and green spaces, support local community projects, share a photo or story of your city, and read about SDG 11.
Facts: it brings Urban October to an end on 31 October each year; the first global celebration was in Shanghai in 2014; up to 3.4 billion people worldwide experience some form of housing inadequacy, according to UN-Habitat material for 2026.
