National Trick or Treat Day

National Trick or Treat Day is observed on the last Saturday of October, which in 2026 falls on 31 October, the same day as Halloween.

History: it was created in 2019 by the Halloween and Costume Association to make Halloween celebrations safer and more convenient for families, by encouraging trick-or-treating on a Saturday when more adults are home and daylight and supervision are easier. It is distinct from Halloween itself: Halloween is 31 October every year, while National Trick or Treat Day moves to the last Saturday in October in other years.

How to celebrate safely: trick-or-treat in daylight or early evening, go in groups with an adult, wear visible costumes, carry a torch, check treats before eating, keep to well-lit streets, and be kind to neighbours who choose not to take part. Hosts can leave a porch light on, offer allergy-friendly treats, and keep paths clear.

Facts: trick-or-treating grew from earlier guising, souling and Halloween pranks into a community activity in the 1930s; the last-Saturday rule means that in some years this day and Halloween are on different dates.
